The Tŝilhqot’in National Government (TNG) is deeply concerned following the Province of British Columbia’s decision to rescind three Closed Motor Vehicle Hunting prohibitions within Tŝilhqot’in Territory. The regulatory changes came into effect on July 1, 2026.
The changes affect the Groundhog, Hungry Valley and Rocky Lake areas, where road access has expanded significantly over recent decades due to extensive logging practices.
Restricting increased motorized hunting access in these areas has been a longstanding priority for the Tŝilhqot’in Nation. The TNG participated in the Province’s engagement process in good faith and opposed removing the prohibitions due to increased pressures on wildlife and habitat.
The Province’s decision is a serious concern for the protection and exercise of Tŝilhqot’in rights. Allowing motorized hunting access in these areas, combined with the current expanded road networks, compounds existing impacts on wildlife and habitats.
“The Province’s decision to allow motor vehicle hunting is deeply concerning given the Province’s latest moose population estimates are the lowest ever on record for the region. At a time when moose populations are already facing increased risks and habitat loss from wildfires and mismanagement, allowing easier access to hunters is not the solution. We oppose this decision and will continue to do everything we can to recover moose populations in our territory — with or without support from the Province.”

“If the Province is going to allow unlimited access to hunters by vehicle, we will have no choice but to consider all options to protect moose populations and our way of life. The protection of our moose populations and other wildlife has been a main priority in the areas where the Province has unilaterally decided to pull wildlife protections. We call on the Province to sit down with us and have meaningful discussions around consent and consultations in this area.”
