Tŝilhqot’in Radio Launches Radio App
The Tŝilhqot’in Nation has launched a Tŝilhqot’in Radio App that allows users to listen at any time from anywhere with on-demand access to Tŝilhqot’in language and cultural content. The App is a milestone for Tŝilhqot’in language revitalization and in supporting cultural and traditional teachings.
Tŝilhqot’in Radio began in 2017 and is available to stream on-line at tsilhqotinradio.ca/live or at 104.5FM in the six Tŝilhqot’in communities, along with Williams Lake. Tŝilhqot’in Radio is a platform for intergenerational cultural and linguistic knowledge. Opportunities for youth in podcast hosting and development have also been provided through Tŝilhqot’in Radio.
The Tŝilhqot’in National Government is the national governing body for the Tŝilhqot’in people. The Tŝilhqot’in Nation is comprised of six communities located throughout the Tŝilhqot’in (Chilcotin) territory and successfully achieved the first court declaration of Aboriginal title in Canadian history (Tsilhqot’in Nation v. British Columbia). Tŝilhqot’in Radio is funded, in part, by Northern Aboriginal Broadcasting.
“We need to see more of who we are reflected in the media. Our language, our traditions, and our values make up who we are as a people. To be able to hear the voices of our people from anywhere – at any time – that is really powerful. We are excited for our children and youth to learn from hearing the language and culture on the Tŝilhqot’in Radio. Our language and culture are strong and we are always working to ensure it stays that way.”
—Nits’ilʔin (Chief) Otis Guichon, Tribal Chief, Tŝilhqot’in National Government, Tŝideldel First Nation
“We have to use technology to our advantage. Everything is on your phone now. The radio app will make it even easier for our people to continue to speak the language and pass down cultural teachings to the next generation.”
—Nits’ilʔin Francis Laceese, Tl’esqox, TNG Tribal Vice-Chief
