Toxic Drug Crisis

On April 12, 2024, the Tŝilhqot’in National Government declared a state of local emergency due to the toxic drug crisis. The order was issued for all six Tŝilhqot’in communities and it provided the Nation with the opportunity to access additional government support.

The toxic drug supply combined with the harms of historical and present-day colonialism are contributing to higher rates of death from toxic drugs amongst Indigenous peoples compared to other populations in the province. Treatment facilities lack the capacity to take on new patients.

Recovery and Treatment

The Tŝilhqot’in National Government is proud to see the incredible work moving forward in the Wellness Centre (Red Road River Recovery) to improve the health and wellbeing of our people and others struggling with addictions in the region. The Tŝilhqot’in-based treatment allows for on the land healing surrounded by Tŝilhqot’in culture and values.

A 90-day residential treatment program will be happening at the former Deer Creek Ranch near Yuneŝit’in. Site preparation has been completed for 10 off-grid solar powered tiny homes. Larger communal buildings will also be constructed.

At the top of Lees Hill, close to the old sawmill site, there will be pre and post-treatment recovery options. Site prep for the 20 off-grid solar powered tiny homes has been completed and we are waiting for these to arrive. The equine therapy centre framing is almost complete on this site as well.

The predicted date of opening is Spring 2026.

Red Road Recovery will be the service providers for Red Road River. For people interested in treatment they can get application information at redroadrecovery.com
