Tŝilhqot’in Nation Impact Assessment Framework
TNG is in the process of developing an Impact Assessment Framework that reflects the Tŝilhqot’in Nation’s vision and values. The framework is being established to promote respect for Tŝilhqot’in rights and title and inform how the Tŝilhqot’in Nation engages with other government when projects are proposed in the territory.
- Establish the process for impact assessments (IAs) in the territory;
- Establish the decision-making criteria for approving or rejecting proposed projects; and
- Establish when an assessment should happen
- To exercise Tŝilhqot’in jurisdiction over nen (land, water and resources).
- To strengthen the Nation to deal with project proposals in an efficient and effective manner reflective of Tŝilhqot’in vision and value.
- To give Tŝilhqot’in members the opportunity to shape how their Nation approaches major project decisions and how members can participate in and inform future decision-making.
- To provide clarity to potential proponents about how the Tŝilhqot’in Nation makes decisions and how free, prior, and informed consent and other international human rights can be respected when considering projects on Tŝilhqot’in nen.
- To tell BC and Canada about the Tŝilhqot’in Nation’s expectations for future impact assessments of projects on Tŝilhqot’in nen.
To help us in this work, we have teamed up with the Centre for Environmental Assessment Research (CEAR) and the University of British Columbia (UBC). UBC is collaborating with TNG by providing researchers and experts to help outline cumulative effects and ensure they are considered in the assessment process.
