Cumulative Effects
About
TNGs Nen and Stewardship Teams have been working to develop a more thorough understanding of the environmental stressors and pressures across Tŝilhqot’in territory in order to support the protection of Tŝilhqot’in title and rights.
Cumulative Effects (CE) are changes to environmental, social, cultural, spiritual, health, and economic values caused by the impacts of past, present, and potential future human activities and natural processes.
It is important to the Nation to understand how human activities contribute to CE, and how the nen changes and impacts the Nation’s cultural security (nenqay detelɁaŝ).
TNG wants to ensure that changes to the nen do not negatively impact the Nation’s ability to practice, preserve, strengthen, and transmit language, culture, and cultural practices effectively.
The Tŝilhqot’in Nation CE tool will be used to help honour the Tŝilhqot’in Nation’s responsibilities to care for the nen and ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy the rich resources and cultural practices that the Nation enjoys today.
The Tŝilhqot’in Nation CE tool will prioritize Tŝilhqot’in values and be designed to enhance the Nation’s ability to exercise jurisdiction across the territory and improve the process of engagement with external governments (provincial or other First Nations governments) and proponents (individuals or companies proposing projects).
The Tŝilhqot’in Nation CE tool will be informative when:
- Screening referrals through the Stewardship Portal
- Implementing the Tŝilhqot’in Nation’s Nen Plans
